Sister Schools

SOL established a sister school program to encourage friendship and understanding and shared learning between students and teachers in the US and Central America. The program pairs up classrooms in the US with those in El Salvador and Nicaragua. These classes exchange letters, pictures, art projects and creative materials depicting life in their schools, communities and countries.

Today, the sister school program reaches 80 teachers and 2,000 students in Nicaragua and the United States. Most of the Nicaragua schools are K-6th grade.

When a class commits to a sister school partnership they are expected to send 4 packets each year to their partner school. The material is ideally sent in Spanish. Due to customs limitations, we suggest only sending large flat envelope packages. SOL’s Nicaragua staff visit the classrooms to share and interpret the packets with the students. During these visits SOL takes donated school supplies to share with the school and offers additional support to the teachers. The local children are always excited to receive correspondence from their partner schools in the US.

Seeds of Learning

SOL offers a general recommendation of themes for each packet, but the packets can include many creative expressions of the culture and educational material of each school. Participation in the program does not require a financial commitment, although US classrooms are encouraged raise funds to help purchase school supplies in Nicaragua to support the under resourced schools.
